Webinar: How to Solve Sink Marks from the Plastics Point of View

Articles, Published Webinars

Injection molders! Do you have that “sinking” feeling when you encounter sink marks? Then join us for this month’s FREE webinar topic, “How to Solve Sink Marks from the Plastics Point of View.” In this presentation, as part of our series of FREE monthly SimTech™ webinars, we will review the nature of sink marks. Sink Marks are depressions on the surface of the part. How do they occur? When the plastic in the mold cools, it shrinks. In thick sections, like where ribs and bosses meet the shrinkage can be enough to form a depression on the wall of the part. As the part continues to cool, molecules inside move closer together, and the plastic shrinks causing an internal stress that tries to collapse the surface of the molded part which eventually creates sink marks. How to avoid and solve this problem? Join our expert instructor, Todd Bryant as he examines the effects on plastic that can cause sink marks and show you how to practice solving this problem utilizing our SimTech injection molding simulator.

Watch an animation explaining injection molding sink marks  in a brief video clip from our popular online course, Injection Molding Part Problems & Solutions.

You’ll get an inside look into the process from the “plastic’s point of view” as the foundation to all molding strategies. This means understanding the concept that all machine controls affect one or more of the four plastic processing variables. Paulson’s entire approach, from starting up a machine for a production run, to problem solving an existing run is to examine the situation from the “plastics point of view”.

Key Take Aways Include:

  • Problem solving sink marks as a part defect
  • Identifying the root cause of sink marks
  • Learn which of the “four plastic variables” affects sink marks and how to adjust it to fix the problem
  • Learn how to use SimTech as a powerful learning tool so you can become a confident molder

Take part in this FREE webinar to learn and apply molding techniques that will dramatically change the way you process.

BONUS!

Special Guest: Donald C. Paulson

Newly inducted into the 2021 Plastics Hall of Fame, (read more here), Donald Paulson is the founder and chairman of Paulson Training Programs, Inc. and the creator of the now widely accepted method of teaching plastic processing from the “Plastics Point of View”. Don will join this webinar and give his personal account of his years of research with the General Motors Institute that lead to transforming injection molding from an art to a science.
