For Immediate Release:
Chester, CT (May 1, 2007)…Plastic Part Design for Injection Molding has just been added to Paulson’s extensive selection of training products. This course demonstrates proven parts designing techniques; provides the necessary hands-on opportunity to see and feel the effects of treating various design details; and delivers important part design knowledge to improve part quality, eliminate mold revisions and reduce costs.
This fully-interactive course is available for taking on the Internet and takes the designer through a procedure that translates the complex subject of plastic part design for injection molding into a simple technique. Many injection molded parts suffer throughout their existence due to minor design defects. The use of this course and the guidelines explained will allow the designer to spot design defects in the drawing stage and save tens of thousands of dollars.
Plastic Part Design for Injection Molding was developed in conjunction with Glenn Beall, a leading industry expert in part design. Beall, president of Glenn Beall Plastics LTD of Libertyville, Ill., is a product designer, inventor, consultant, lecturer, author and plastics activist.
This course is recommended for design part personnel, production supervisors, process engineers, quality control personnel, and molding managers, and will take the learner through seven lessons: Designing the Nominal Wall, Designing Three Dimensional Shapes, Projections off the Nominal Wall, Depressions in the Nominal Wall, Designing Hollow Bosses, Designing Molded Threads, and Designing Parts with Undercuts.
“All of Paulson's fully interactive training programs give employees valuable skills and in-depth understanding for increased performance and company profitability. With a step-by-step procedure, this new course makes plastic part design a logical and comprehensible system. We are thrilled to add another product which will improve quality, reduce costs and improve profitability,” said Paulson President Scott Paulson.

The School of Molding has grown exponentially, tripling in size since its launch in 2004 with the number of graduates from across North America growing by 300 percent in 2006. PSM graduates of the course earn "Paulson Certified" status.
The Paulson School of Molding gives processors the training to:
- Understand processing from the "plastic's point of view"
- Quickly improve knowledge and skills in the technology of injection molding or extrusion
- Minimize production errors and downtime
- Dramatically increase production floor problem-solving ability

Paulson-Certified injection molding professionals receive the only production-floor training program of its kind. Combining hours of hands-on machine time with Paulson’s exclusive SimTech process simulation program and classroom instruction, the School of Molding gives you or your employees the skills needed to dramatically improve molding performance.
Three training levels are availableProMolder 1, 2 and 3each with certificates for successful completion. And, employees are provided with free screening, through the Paulson SkillCheck online test, to ensure proper class placement.
Lead instructor for the program is Umberto Catignani, a recognized expert in the plastics industry and principal of Atlanta-based Orbital Plastics Consulting, Inc., the Paulson School of Molding partner. “It is always a wonderful experience to hear attendees voice their comments on the training they received. They are always positive and upbeat that they now understand complex molding phenomena and will be able to implement this knowledge immediately upon returning to their plant,” says Catignani. He adds, “My goal is to explain complex molding problems and situations in a way that anyone can understand and have the ability to apply this knowledge to a future problem.” Additionally, Scott Paulson, President of Paulson Training says, “The Paulson School of Molding has far exceeded our initial expectations and we’re pleased that our industry has responded with such enthusiasm to the expansion of our on-site training division. Most rewarding is the results companies are experiencing from the training and the positive feedback we receive regarding the curriculum, teaching style and program quality. We’re focused on expanding the program in both number of classes offered and subject matter additions in the future.”
Classroom Instruction Combined with Hands-On Machine Training
Throughout the program, attendees will engage in a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on machine time and the use of SimTech, Paulson's unique injection molding simulation program that allows for experimentation and problem solving in one hour what would take an entire day or longer on an actual machine. SimTech, in short, is a program one can use to learn how to “process out” part defects; this exclusive and powerful combination of hands-on machine time, process simulation and classroom instruction will further emphasize the unique advantage we offer. However, nothing replaces actual hands-on machine time, and there is plenty of that incorporated into the program as well.
“No other training class in the industry can teach you what the Paulson School of Molding can," said Paulson. "We combine state-of-the-art classroom instruction featuring Paulson's SimTech molding simulation program with over 20 hours of hands-on machine time. This ‘learning, then doing’ model is proven to be the best way to teach the molding skills that will make a big difference when graduates of the PSM return to their own plant floor."

Chester, CT (June 1, 2006) At the fourth annual “SPE Celebrates” Banquet, held on May 10, 2006 at the Hilton Charlotte Center City in Charlotte, North Carolina, Donald C. Paulson received the SPE Lifetime Engineering and Technical Achievement Award. Mr. Paulson has devoted his career to the plastics industry for nearly 40 years. He is the author of over 40 technical papers, 12 training courses on a variety of plastics types, a lecturer, seminar instructor, and industry consultant. He is also the founder of Paulson Training Programs based in Chester, Connecticut.
"It is a great honor for my father to receive this award. His dedication and enthusiasm for advancements in plastics processing have been the foundation of many revolutionary developments in our industry. From research, to process controls to training and simulation, his life’s work and passion has been dedicated to the industry and we’re pleased to announce this honor for his achievements,” says Scott Paulson, president of Paulson Training Programs, of his father’s award.
In 1963, Mr. Paulson was hired by General Motors Institute to develop a processing laboratory and plastics training program for the company’s engineering students. Within six months he had the laboratory operating and the curricula written. “At the time, plastics processing was considered an art, and training was only taught by the limited opinions of experienced processors,” said Mr. Paulson. He felt that he must be able to explain the molding process based on mathematics and the physical laws with which students were familiar. He gathered real data by installing pressure transducers and thermocouplers inside the machine. His research resulted in the ability to accurately predict part shrinkage based on cavity pressure, and showed that molecular orientation was directly related to the flow rate and cooling time.
Mr. Paulson developed a method of injection molding polyester at his next position as the Research Manager for New Britain Machine Co. He developed Control Process Inc., and was contracted to supply NBM with what would be the first closed-loop molding machine control systems using cavity pressure transducers. In 1981, he started Paulson Training Programs, Inc. to provide training in process control for molding technicians. Paulson Training Programs has become the global industry leader in plastics training, with over 3,000 companies and 30,000 industry professionals having used the training courses he developed. Mr. Paulson’s latest accomplishment is in injection molding simulation software, similar to what is used to flight simulators for pilot training.
As an instructor, author, trainer, and patent holder, Donald C. Paulson has changed the plastics processing industry from an art form to a science-based logical system. His accomplishments allow industry personnel to predict and control all aspects of plastics processing properties.
